What Are Fire Zone Block Plans?

When a fire alarm triggers, every second counts. A Fire Zone Block Plan is a detailed, permanent diagram that shows the layout of your building and clearly highlights each fire detection and alarm zone.

It is a mandatory requirement under AS 1670:2018. Without a clear, correctly oriented block plan located at your Fire Indicator Panel (FIP), the Fire Brigade cannot quickly identify the source of an alarm, and your building could fail its Essential Safety Measures (ESM) audit.

What Needs to be Included in a Fire Block Plan?

In Australia, a fire block plan isn't just a "map"—it is a legal document. To meet AS 1670.1 standards and satisfy local fire authorities (like FRV or CFA in Victoria), your plan must be accurate, permanent, and easy to read under pressure.

If your plan is missing any of the following, your building may fail its next ESM (Essential Safety Measures) audit:

  • Correct building orientation and “You Are Here” reference
The plan must match the real-world layout of the building. When viewed, directions on the plan must align exactly with the physical space so emergency crews can instantly understand where they are.

  • Clearly defined fire detection zones
All fire alarm zones must be clearly numbered and outlined. Zone numbers must match exactly what appears on the Fire Indicator Panel (FIP), with no ambiguity or overlap.

  • Identification of safety-critical equipment
The location of the Fire Indicator Panel, any sub-panels, and the main electrical switchboard must be clearly shown.

  • Fire service infrastructure (where required)
For larger or more complex sites, the plan must show the location of fire hydrants, booster assemblies, tanks, and other water supply points to assist responding crews.

  • Mandatory wording and emergency information
Legislation requires specific instructions to be displayed, including emergency contact details and guidance on system operation or reset (where authorised).

  • Permanent and durable construction
Fire Zone Block Plans are typically installed near entrances, fire panels, or plant rooms. They must be weather-resistant, fade-resistant, and remain legible over time.

Why Your Business Needs a Fire Zone Block Plan

Fire Zone Block Plans are required under Australian Standard AS 1670:2018 for fire detection, warning, control, and intercom systems. They help:

  • Fire services quickly locate zones in alarm

  • Maintenance teams test detectors

  • Compliance inspectors verify safety documentation

  • Facility managers demonstrate adherence to safety standards

Without a compliant plan, your building may face compliance issues during audits or fire safety inspections.

A Fire Zone Block Plan is a living document. If you renovate your office, change your warehouse racking, or upgrade your detection system, your plan is no longer compliant. We specialize in updating old or incorrect plans to ensure you stay on the right side of the law and pass your annual ESM inspections.
