Evacuation Requirements for Schools & Childcare
Victorian government, Catholic and independent schools must maintain a site-specific Emergency Management Plan under VRQA registration requirements. Department of Education guidance covers evacuation diagrams and area maps showing off-site assembly points and routes.
AS 3745–2010 — Planning for emergencies in facilities sets out evacuation diagram requirements, including content, orientation and placement.
For childcare centres and kindergartens covered by the Education and Care Services National Regulations, Regulation 97 requires emergency and evacuation floor plans and instructions to be displayed prominently near each exit.
Diagram Content & Installation
Evacuation diagrams must include the applicable minimum elements under AS 3745, such as the floor layout, “You Are Here” location, designated exits, relevant emergency equipment, assembly information, legend and validity date.
Each diagram must be oriented to its display position and installed with its bottom edge between 1,200 mm and 1,600 mm above floor level. Locations and quantities should be determined for the facility; childcare services covered by Regulation 97 must display floor plans and instructions prominently near each exit.

Five-Year Reviews
Review existing diagrams before their validity period expires, which must not exceed five years under AS 3745. We check the information and update the diagrams where required.

Maps showing primary and secondary off-site assembly points, evacuation routes, surrounding streets and relevant landmarks, with distances and estimated travel times to support your school’s EMP.
